I have 2 children. A 5 year old son Elijah and a 9 month old girl Eliana.

What is ONE song that reminds you of your child(ren)?

the 1 song that reminds me of my son is “You got A friend in me”, it plays in the opening of Toy Story 3. It’s a song he sing with his dad all the time. its so adorable. No song reminds me of Eliana just yet.however I cant wait until one does.

How would you define your style of parenting?

I would say my parenting is old school. The way i was raised. Stern and sweet. Relaxed and cautious.

Do you have a restaurant or favorite place that you will only go with your child(ren)?

Before Eliana, Elijah Devon (daddy) and I would go to AppleBees very often. After Eliana we made eating at home extremely fun. We’ve always loved cooking at home. Applebees was special bonding time for Elijah, because we new there would be a slight change when the baby was born. We prefer pigging out at home though.

What is one piece of advice you would give your child(ren) that can apply to their entire life?

One piece of advice i would love for the children to apply to their life is: DON’T BE A FOLLOWER, It is important to know, you are just as important as an individual. You Are good enough

So, this summer I got a brand new library card. I was so stoked!!! I felt like almost as good as I would feel if Denzel Washington had showed upon my doorstep( another post for another time). Anyway, I made myself a summer reading list to encourage Bubba to read the books off of her reading list(its not going well) and I have been doing really well with it. I could read all day every day without the benefits of technology. As I tell any and everyone, KEEP YOUR DAMN NOOK BOOKS!!! Today’s quote reflects exactly how I feel when I’m reading.

WHAT ARE YOU READING THIS SUMMER?

Happy Anniversary, K!!!

Standard

At the end of the school year, I told Bubba  that this summer would be our “summer to learn something new”. When I said “our”, I thought I meant she would get to experience all the actvities (for free)that New York has to offe and I would take the pictures..And so far, we’ve done ok. She started her writer’s workshop at a library in Manhattan. We were going to let her try her hand at making her own superhero but the program somehow got all screwed up. But it was still nice to be outside that day. We went to Coney Island’s Luna Park for the Indepenence Day weekend.  So far, everything we tried has been new…for her.

I also have been going through something new. I reconnected with my high school best friend and though it isn’t a new relationship time wise, it has turned into something new. My friend is a mom now and she looks different. She has that tiredness around the eyes that all moms of toddlers have. She looks at her baby with that little bit of wonder that we all have when we first start out. You know, that sort of ‘aww’ with the twinkle in your eye? Anyway, she looks beautiful. When I was with her and our girls, I felt like there was a new unspoken agreement with us. Yeah, we are moms, but we were the same girls who wanted the Oprah-Gayle friendship. The cash flow and notoriety and the solid foundation all good friendships were built on. When she had her baby, I had just lost my mother a few months before. I made it to the baby shower and just that was hard. I wandered away from her, but when I was ready to be her friend, she was ready to have me back. I don’t know any friend like her who would just take me as I am.And I love her for it. That’s what’s going to make her baby love her. It’s the reason I’ve loved her since October 27, 2004. To something new…and to something just as I left it..

I know that I should be enjoying my summer with Bubba and I really am but unfortunately summer won’t last always and when Bubba returns to school in September, I will be rotting at home. I lost my job as a cashier in March and its time to get back to the daily grind. I have been looking left and right for something I can do that I can somewhat enjoy. My last job was pretty okay (not including the pain in the ass customers and weird staff members). I think I would be well suited for an office job. However, I haven’t worked in an office setting in almost ten years. And all I did at that job was a lot of filing. It seems if an office job is what I want,I’m going to have to figure out how to use all of these Microsoft programs, which is a job in itself. When I feel really discouraged, I think about how much better my life will be once I’m making my own money again. I consider how broke I always am and the look on Bubba’s face when I can’t afford to buy her a new doll on a whim. It really sucks and I hate it! Which brings me to today’s quote. I think I’m going to have it printed and carry it with me whenever I have a job interview. Maybe I’ll even put it on my ceiling as the last thing I see before closing my eyes. Anyway, I hope it helps all of you who need a little encouragement in any area of your life.

Mommy and Me Mondays #8-The Cooper Family

How many children do you have and what are their ages?
I have two children, ages 4 and 8. My 4-year-old is a quick-witted, smart little guy that loves dinosaurs. My 8-year-old is a funny, sweet boy with an excellent memory who loves cars and also happens to have autism.

What is ONE song that reminds you of your child(ren)?
I’ve always associated Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars with my oldest son. I remember hearing it in the car several times while he grew in my belly, and he would just flip all around as if he loved it too. The lyrics seem fitting, too. “We’ll do it all. Everything. On our own. We don’t need. Anything. Or Anyone.”
I don’t really have such a strong song association for my youngest, but he sure does like Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.
How would you define your style of parenting?
If you’ve ever heard of Parenting with Love and Logic, I’d say that we follow the model almost to a tee. I believe in my children showing us respect, but I think that also means that I’m respectful of their feelings. We apologize for our mistakes in this house–children and adults alike. The punishment must fit the crime. Whenever possible, we use positive reinforcement rather than punishment to achieve results. I find this method holds the most results. Besides, punishment doesn’t seem to work at all on our 8-year-old anyway. He does much better when he’s working for a reward.
Do you have a restaurant or favorite place that you will only go with your child(ren)?
One of our favorite places to go is Applebee’s. They have more options for corn-free food than most places. We also typically get our food pretty quickly there, and that’s really important not only for small children, but for children with autism. We have the most positive dining experience in places that understand that we want our children’s food first.
What is one piece of advice you would give your child(ren) that can apply to their entire life?
I like to tell my children “never give up.” If you don’t get something the first time you try to do it, that doesn’t mean you won’t ever get it. Perseverance is a really important trait for a person to have. Perseverance is the only way my oldest son learned how to buckle his own seatbelt, button up his pants, and snap his fingers (something that he’s really proud of himself for). It’s a quality that’s helped my youngest learn to color inside the lines and begin writing his name. Teaching my children to never give up will help them for the rest of their lives as new challenges get presented, as they will need to learn to handle them with grace.

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

I have 2 children a boy and a girl, ages 2 & 4 respectively

What is ONE song that reminds you of your child(ren)?

Happy by Pharrell

How would you define your style of parenting?

I pretty much let them do what they want. I only structure some things. We like to have a good time and fly by the seat of our pants. But when things get out of hand I’m the one to disciple them. Dad has too much of a soft spot and will let them just get away with anything.

Do you have a restaurant or favorite place that you will only go with your child(ren)?

We spend a lot of time at Fort Greene Park either walking or on the playground.

What is one piece of advice you would give your child(ren) that can apply to their entire life?

Love yourself. Do not allow anyone to tear you down and make you feel worthless.
